Removing PDF Annotations Without Losing Page Content

A review round leaves highlights, sticky notes and links scattered across the pages. Removing them is straightforward once you know what the file recorded as an annotation and what it baked into the page.

Why this comes up

Different tools save marks in different ways: a comment added in a PDF reader is usually an annotation object, while a highlight painted by an editor can become part of the page content. That difference decides whether a cleanup run can see it.

Check before you run it

  • Check the type boxes before removing everything. The tool lists Highlight, Strikeout, Underline, Ink, shapes, Link, Text, Free text and Popup. All is ticked by default, which also removes hyperlinks; untick Link when the file's navigation should survive.
  • Limit the pass to the pages that were reviewed. The page box accepts ranges such as 1-10,13,14,100-. Removing from every page is fine for a review copy, but a targeted pass leaves the rest of the document untouched.
  • Tell annotation ink apart from page content. A highlight or shape drawn with an editor's Draw tool can be saved as real page content rather than an annotation. If removal leaves it behind, the mark is part of the page and needs the original file.

When to reach for it

  • A client's comments must not travel with the final file. Remove the comment, highlight and free-text types, keep links if the document still needs them, and check a page or two after download.
  • A web-exported PDF should print without clickable links. Links are annotations too. Untick everything except Link, or leave All ticked when the print copy needs no interactive elements at all.

One question we get

What counts as an annotation?

Highlights, strikeouts, notes, free text, shapes, stamps and links — everything readers overlaid on the page. Tick the types to strip and the pages to clean.

Where it fits

The tools people usually open next to Remove Annotations:

  • Watermark — Add an image or text watermark to PDF documents.
  • Bates Numbering — Bates stamp multiple files at once.
  • Edit Metadata — Change PDF Author, Title, Keywords, Subject and other metadata fields

Every tool works on a copy, so the original file is never touched. Uploads are stored under an unguessable id and deleted automatically two hours after you last open them; nothing is listed, shared or indexed. More on the security page.
