Merging PDFs: What the Combined File Inherits
A merged PDF is not a fresh document; it is the sources laid end to end. What each source carries — its bookmarks, its page size, its weight — decides how the combined file behaves.
Why this comes up
Bundles are usually assembled from files that were never designed to sit together: a typed cover, a scanned appendix, a contract from another firm. The merge succeeds technically while the result still feels like three documents stapled together.
Check before you run it
- Set the card order, not the upload order. The page sequence follows the file cards, so drag them until the first page of the bundle is the first card. Check the join between each pair before downloading.
- Check the bookmarks each source brings. Outlines travel with their pages, so a bundle of chapters can arrive with several competing outlines. Decide whether that helps navigation or needs tidying before the merge.
- Expect mixed page sizes to stay mixed. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, which preserves quality but also preserves a Letter page beside an A4 one. If the bundle must print uniformly, resize the sources or the result.
When to reach for it
- A cover sheet and a scanned appendix must travel as one file. Images are accepted alongside PDFs, so a one-page cover and a scan can become a single bundle without a separate conversion step.
- Separate departments contributed their own sections. Merging in the agreed order gives one submission, while each section keeps its own pages and bookmarks.
One question we get
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
As many as your upload limit allows — each file becomes a card and you combine them in the order shown. Drag the cards to reorder before saving, and the pages keep their quality.
Where it fits
The tools people usually open next to Merge PDF:
- Compare PDF — See what changed between two versions of a document — page by page, side by side, with every meaningful edit named.
- Split every N pages — Split a document into chunks of N pages.
- N-up — Print multiple pages per sheet per paper.
Every tool works on a copy, so the original file is never touched. Uploads are stored under an unguessable id and deleted automatically two hours after you last open them; nothing is listed, shared or indexed. More on the security page.
