Step-by-step guide

How to split a PDF in half

A scanner set to “book” or a PDF made from A3 spreads can put two pages on one sheet. Splitting in half cuts each sheet into the pages it contains and puts them back into reading order.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drag your PDF onto the box or click Choose file. It is sent over an encrypted connection and only used for this task.

  2. 2

    Set the options

Adjust split, split position (part one / part two), automatically detect pages to exclude and exclude pages:. Every field has a sensible default, so you can usually run the tool straight away.

  3. 3

    Run it and download

Press Split in half and the page shows progress while it works. When it finishes you get a download link — nothing is emailed and nothing is stored longer than it needs to be.

Vertical or horizontal

A two-page spread is split vertically: left half and right half. A sheet holding one page above another is split horizontally. Auto mode uses the page’s own shape when you are unsure. The split position can be adjusted when the fold is not exactly at 50%.

Covers, odd pages and repagination

Use the exclude-pages field for a cover or a blank sheet that should not be cut. “Re-paginate from booklet scan” puts the halves into reading order after splitting, which matters when the scan alternates left and right pages. Enable right-to-left for Arabic or Hebrew books.

Check the reading order

Open the output and read the first few pages as a sequence, not as isolated images. A correct split should make the text continue from one page to the next. Check the page count and the last page; an excluded page should be absent, not duplicated. Keep the original until the order is accepted.

Good habits for Split in half

  • Page thumbnails are tap-friendly, so you can reorder and delete on a phone.
  • Every tool works on a copy — your original file is never modified.
  • Use Split by text when a document has no bookmarks to split on.

Common questions

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool on this site is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily task limit.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The tools run in your browser and are processed by this server.

What happens to my files?

They are stored under an unguessable id and swept automatically after a couple of hours. Nothing is shared or indexed.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The page pickers and editors are built for touch, so dragging, rotating and selecting pages all work without a mouse.

What does Split in half do exactly?

Splits each spread into two pages — left/right or top/bottom.

Does it work for A3 scans of A4 pages?

Yes. That is the classic use case: one A3 sheet holds two A4 pages, and the vertical split recovers them.

Can I keep the cover uncut?

Yes. Put the cover page in the exclude-pages field. It is left as a single page while the rest of the document is split.

Why is the reading order wrong?

The source probably alternates left and right pages. Enable re-pagination, or choose the right-to-left option for the book.

What the other tools do

Merge PDF

Combines PDFs and images into one document. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution and bookmarks come across with their pages.

Resize

Changes the paper: scale every page to a new size (A4, Letter, Legal and the rest), add margins around existing content, or shrink the file.

Organize PDF

Rebuilds the document's page order: reorder, rotate, duplicate, delete or insert pages. Thumbnails make the change visible before it is applied, so the result is not a guess.

Rotate

Turns pages by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and saves the orientation into the file, so every viewer and printer agrees.
