“Unlock” means two different things in PDFs: removing the password needed to open the file, or removing owner restrictions on printing, copying and editing. The tool needs the current password for the first case and cannot break encryption in the second.
Step by step
-
1
Upload your PDF
Drag your PDF onto the box or click Choose file. It is sent over an encrypted connection and only used for this task.
-
2
Set the options
Adjust password. Every field has a sensible default, so you can usually run the tool straight away.
-
3
Run it and download
Press Unlock and the page shows progress while it works. When it finishes you get a download link — nothing is emailed and nothing is stored longer than it needs to be.
What unlock can and cannot do
If you know the open password, the tool decrypts a copy and lets you save an unprotected PDF. If the file only carries owner restrictions set by the author, those permissions can be removed where the format allows it. This is not a password-cracking service: a file you cannot open cannot be unlocked without the password.
Only unlock documents you own or have permission to modify. The original stays untouched, and the unlocked copy is a new file.
Password protection vs permissions
An open password encrypts the content. Permissions are flags that tell a viewer what to allow; they are not a guarantee against a determined reader. If the goal is confidentiality, use a strong open password with Protect PDF. If the goal is a clean copy for editing, unlocking permissions is the right job.
After unlocking
Open the new copy in a second viewer and check printing, copying and searching. If the document contains a digital signature, changing encryption or permissions can invalidate it; keep the signed original and work on a separate copy. If the unlocked file will be shared again, protect it with a new password rather than sending it open.
Keep the original safe
Store the encrypted original separately from the unlocked working copy. If you later need to prove the document was protected, the original is the evidence. Delete the working copy from the service when the job is done, or let the automatic retention window remove it.
Good habits for Unlock
- Keep a copy of the password — PDFwerk cannot recover it for you.
- Unlocking needs the current password; the tool does not break encryption.
- Permissions are advisory: a determined reader can bypass them, so use a password when the content really matters.
Common questions
Is this tool free?
Yes. Every tool on this site is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily task limit.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The tools run in your browser and are processed by this server.
What happens to my files?
They are stored under an unguessable id and swept automatically after a couple of hours. Nothing is shared or indexed.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The page pickers and editors are built for touch, so dragging, rotating and selecting pages all work without a mouse.
What does Unlock do exactly?
Remove restrictions and password from PDF files
Can you unlock a PDF without the password?
No. If the file is encrypted with an open password, the password is required. The tool does not crack encryption.
Does unlocking remove editing restrictions?
It can remove owner permissions on files where the format permits it, giving you a normal copy for editing. Check the output in a second viewer.
Can I protect the file again afterwards?
Yes. Unlock a copy for editing, then use Protect PDF with a new password before sharing it again.
