Step-by-step guide

How to flip a PDF

Flipping is a mirror, not a rotation. A horizontal flip swaps left and right; a vertical flip swaps top and bottom. It is the right tool for artwork and reverse-side scans, and the wrong tool for an upside-down page.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Drag your PDF onto the box or click Choose file. It is sent over an encrypted connection and only used for this task.

  2. 2

    Set the options

Adjust direction and pages. Every field has a sensible default, so you can usually run the tool straight away.

  3. 3

    Run it and download

Press Flip and the page shows progress while it works. When it finishes you get a download link — nothing is emailed and nothing is stored longer than it needs to be.

Flip vs rotate

Rotating turns the page around its centre and is what you want for a sideways scan. Flipping reflects the content, which reverses text and images. If the text reads backwards after the change, you probably wanted Rotate PDF instead. A vertical flip turns a page upside down in mirror order; it is not the same as a 180° rotation.

Horizontal and vertical

Choose horizontal to mirror left and right, or vertical to mirror top and bottom. Apply it to all pages for a deliberate design, or list only the pages that need the effect. Flipping both directions is equivalent to a 180° rotation, so use the rotation tool for that result.

When a flip is useful

Reverse-side scans, iron-on transfers, print proofs and artwork that must face the other way are legitimate uses. On a text document, a flip is almost always a mistake: the words become unreadable. Check the first page at 100% before applying the same operation to the rest of the document.

Good habits for Flip

  • Page thumbnails are tap-friendly, so you can reorder and delete on a phone.
  • Every tool works on a copy — your original file is never modified.
  • Use Split by text when a document has no bookmarks to split on.

Common questions

Is this tool free?

Yes. Every tool on this site is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily task limit.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The tools run in your browser and are processed by this server.

What happens to my files?

They are stored under an unguessable id and swept automatically after a couple of hours. Nothing is shared or indexed.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The page pickers and editors are built for touch, so dragging, rotating and selecting pages all work without a mouse.

What does Flip do exactly?

Mirror PDF pages horizontally or vertically.

Does flipping change the page size?

No. It mirrors the content within the page. A landscape page stays landscape.

Can I flip only one page?

Yes. Use the Pages field to target specific pages instead of the whole document.

Why is the text backwards?

That is what a horizontal flip does. Use Rotate PDF if the page should read normally in a different orientation.

What the other tools do

Organize PDF

Rebuilds the document's page order: reorder, rotate, duplicate, delete or insert pages. Thumbnails make the change visible before it is applied, so the result is not a guess.

Rotate PDF

Turns pages by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and saves the orientation into the file, so every viewer and printer agrees.

Split in half

Cuts two-page spreads into single pages: a scanned book spread, an A3 sheet that should read as two A4 pages, or a form printed two-up. The cut follows the page's own shape unless you force a direction.

Resize

Changes the paper: scale every page to a new size (A4, Letter, Legal and the rest), add margins around existing content, or shrink the file.
